Doris Drummond

Service Details

Doris Ruth Drummond, of Polk City left this earthly life June 12, 2021 to meet Jesus face-to-face, whom she invited into her heart at the age of 10 years. She was 96 years old.

Doris was born September 7, 1924 to parents Ralph and Julia White. She had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. With the exception of a short time when she was young, and the years during WWII, Doris lived in the Polk City vicinity. She graduated from Polk City High School in 1942 and was the last surviving member of her 18 classmates.

Soon after graduation, Doris met and married her life-long sweetheart, John William (Bill) Drummond. Doris loved to share the story of how they met at a roller rink where he asked her for the “moonlight skate.” Like other young couples of the “Greatest Generation,” they wanted to marry right away despite the war. So they eloped to Missouri on May 24, 1942, since Doris was only 17 years old and underage in Iowa.

After the war, the Drummonds began farming and raising a family. They quickly had 2 boys and a daughter. Doris loved being a homemaker and mother. In later years, she also worked at Iowa Paint and Younkers Department Store in Des Moines. She was a dedicated mother, and her children recall her love of laughter and the unique gestures of love she showed to each one of them. One of the greatest joys in Doris’ life was seeing each of her family accept Christ into their hearts.

Doris had a real love of music, and a God-given talent for singing. She had a sweet soprano voice, and she used that gift to glorify God by singing frequently at weddings and funerals and in worship services at the Polk City Evangelical Free Church where she and Bill were active members. And one of her favorite activities was singing hymns in their family quartet with her husband and children. God also gave Doris a fervent passion for lost souls, without Christ. She truly loved people with the love of the Lord. All who knew Doris could feel her warmth, joyful spirit, and her genuine, caring nature. And when grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, Doris showered them with attention and assurance that Jesus loves them just as they are.

Doris Drummond’s life had true significance. She was a proud wife of 78 years. She walked a path of unwavering devotion to her faith. And she had an eternal impact on her family as Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She will be missed and remembered with love.

Doris is survived by her sister Mildred (Midge) Kramer; sons, Michael (Carolyn) Drummond and Jerry (Jan) Drummond; daughter, Roxanna (Gene) DeMoss; 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband John William (Bill) Drummond; mother, Julia White; father, Ralph White; brothers, William (Bill) White, James White, Lloyd (buster) White; and sister Helen Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, June 24 2021, with visitation at 11 a.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines. For those unable to attend the service in person, a live stream of the service is available below. A graveside service will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Union Cemetery in Polk City.

In loving memory of Doris, memorial contributions may be directed to Hidden Acres Christian Center, 3837 Union Ave., Dayton, Iowa 50530, or Hope Ministries in Des Moines.
