James W. Young

James W. Young, 88, passed away June 5, 2021 at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, Iowa.

James was born on December 29, 1932 in Clarinda, Iowa to Trevia (Hardee) and Dorman Young. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and later worked as an Engineer for the Des Moines Public Schools.

In his free time, James enjoyed horse racing and attended the Kentucky Derby and races at Aksarben. He treasured his time outdoors mowing, gardening, and landscaping his beautiful yard, and most of all spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Debbie Young, John Young and Carol (John) Turpen; grandchildren, Darren (Evelyn) Sanchez, James Young, Alexis Young, Bailey Turpen and Brady Turpen; great-grandchildren, Julian, Noah and Benny; his sister, Marie Rasner; sisters-in-law, Reta Robey, Ruth (Roger) McKeever, Ruth Kouski and Ginny Young; brother-in-law, John Pfeiffer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Hazel Young in 2015; his parents, Dorman and Trevia Young; daughter-in-law, Celia Young; brothers, Carroll, Lavern and Allen Young; sisters, Addie Jennings, Virginia Boatner and Norma Jean Pfeiffer; brothers-in-law, Ray Rasner, Charles “Butch” Robey and Roland Kouski.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa with visitation on Wednesday, June 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. and the funeral service on Thursday, June 10 at 2:00 p.m. followed by burial at Hartford Cemetery in Hartford, Iowa.
