Service Details

Larry Eugene Brandow, 74, died May 29, 2021. He was born January 12, 1947 in Des Moines, IA to Jo Ann (Caldwell) and Burdette Brandow. Larry attended high school in Carlisle until he left school his senior year to join the Marine Corps. During his 6 years of service, Larry earned two purple hearts and other commendations. While overseas in Vietnam he served in the USMC First Marines 1-1 Company B from 1966-1968 and later in his military career he was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal. Being able to serve his country was a great source of pride for Larry. He passed on the values that were engrained into his person from the Marine Corps to his family. Larry lived his life by the Marine Corps saying “Semper Fidelis” or “Always Faithful.” That is who he was and what he stood for.

After fulfilling his service to his country, he obtained his GED and college course credits. Larry worked for the City of Des Moines for over 33 years until his retirement in 2002.

In his free time, Larry enjoyed fishing, driving his Corvette on road trips, watching Notre Dame College football, and most of all – time spent with his family whether it was a barbeque or helping with daily chores. Larry was a genuine, selfless, good man. He had a respectable sense of humor and the words service, honor, and sacrifice come to mind when thinking of Larry. He did not know the word “quit” and was a Marine thru and thru.

He was a member of the Veterans Center on 86th, the Marine Corps League, Warren County Corvette Club, and devoted to daily workouts at Anytime Fitness.

Larry is survived by his wife of 24 years, Renee Brandow; his children, Barbera (Chris) Jackson, Brian Brandow and Jake Brando; grandson, Trenton Jackson; siblings, Ron (Molly) Brandow, Terrie (Gene) Shipley, Linda (Jim) Parrish and Larry Miller; and the mother of his children, Vicki Onstot Brandow.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin infant sons, and his step-father, Lloyd Miller.

A graveside service will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. Please meet family at the administration building promptly at 9:10 a.m. to process to the chapel for the service.
