Rodney Dean Asbra
August 8, 1934 – May 27,2021

Rod was born to Fred and Genevieve Asbra on August 8, 1934 and grew up in in Sioux City, Iowa. At 17 years old he joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii, before it was a state! Even though he was in the Navy, Rod never served on a ship. Most of his career was spent as a flight trainer and he loved his military career. He retired from the military and had many interesting jobs.

Rod married Joanne Hornby on April 28, 1951. They were married 25 years and to that union they were blessed with sons, Michael (Serena) Asbra and Steven Asbra, and daughter Stacey (Steven) Engemoen. Rod has 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren.

Rod moved to Iowa and married Debby on October 8, 2008.

Rod was a story teller and a great lover of dogs. His favorite activity was working his crossword puzzle with a cup of coffee in hand every morning. He was a voracious reader and loved a great bowl of soup. He relished the summer heat and working his magic in the yard.

His greatest joy was that he fell in love with Jesus again later in his life and that he restored relationships with his children who he adored. Rod shared this love of Jesus and faith with everyone including his doctors and nurses. They all loved him and his spirit was a beautiful testimony to all whom he touched.

The family will direct memorial contributions to the Cumming Community Church benevolence fund honoring our church family for all their help in Rod’s journey and to pass gifts to others in need.

A memorial service lead by Pastor Thomas Cackler will be held at Cumming Community Church in Cumming, Iowa on June 23, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall. Rod’s cremated remains will be laid to rest later that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel with military honors.
