Duane Edward Sheets passed away on October 1, 2009. He was born on January 1, 1935 to Cary and Opal Sheets.
Duane is survived by his wife, Joyce Sheets, three children, Dianne Noland, Bruce Sheets and Duane Sheets II, Sister Margaret Aschan, Brothers Donald and Marvin Sheets, 8 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.
Duane worked for Meredith Donnelly until his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed being a Fix-it-man for his family and friends. Duane was a 1951 graduate of East High and played the trumpet in the band.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, October 5, 2009, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Sunday, October 4, 2009.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Iowa, 5911 Meredith Drive, Ste. E., Des Moines, Iowa 50322-1903.

I am sorry to hear of Duane's passing. He was ever upbeat and positive, and I always considered him my friend.We collaborated in many activities together throughout our years at East High. It is great that you two had several years together.

My memories of Duane in high school are of a shy but very polite young man who was always around but never in the way. As an older man, I saw the love and caring he had for his wife and family. He was still a very polite and somewhat shy senior that I enjoyed talking to at our monthly East High luncheons. He will be missed.
