Betsy R. Simonsen

Betsy R. Simonsen, age 89, died peacefully on May 27, 2021. She was born January 4, 1932 in the country of Norway to Erik and Beate Dokken, with the given name of Ragnhild Eriksen.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2021 at Runnells Christian Church in Runnells, IA, with burial to follow at Lowman Cemetery in Runnells, IA. Visitation will be held from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. on Thursday June 3, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines.

Betsy married Helmer Simonsen on December 30, 1961. In 1970, Betsy and Helmer and their three children moved from Norway to Des Moines, Iowa. She became a United States citizen in 1976. Betsy was a proud homemaker and took pride in raising her family. Her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother.

She is survived by her children, Irene Simonsen, Stan (Jill) Simonsen and Jon Tore (Eva) Dokken; daughter-in-law, Dee Simonsen; grandchildren, Stacy Simonsen, Christine (Cole) Baber, Amy Simonsen, Kelsie Simonsen, Anna Simonsen, Maria (Thomas) Aagesen and Haavard (Synne) Aagesen; two great grandsons; sister, Gerd Ruud; and other loving family and friends.

Betsy is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Helmer; son, Ron; siblings, Brynhild, Kaare, Edvin and Martin.

The family would like to thank Wesley Acres Adult Day Center, Family Ties of Iowa, Parkridge Nursing and Rehab and Care Initiatives for their excellent care over the past years.
