Ronald Lee Longnecker passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2021. Ron was born on November 14, 1950 to Archie and Beverly (Apland) Longnecker in Ames, Iowa, the youngest of four boys. In his younger years, they lived in central Iowa and Rockford, Illinois.
Ron graduated from Ankeny High School in 1968. He was active in many sports and especially loved basketball.
Ron married the love of his life, Debbie Robinson on May 20, 1972, and they made their home in Ankeny.
Ron had a career in law enforcement and was an investigator for the Public Defender. He was a member of the National Guard and Army Reserve.
Ron was a fun-loving person with a big laugh and an infectious smile who loved cheering on the Cyclones and Cubs. Over the years, Ron and Deb had and loved many Schnauzers. He played an important role in the lives of his family and many friends, and he will be greatly missed by them, and his best friend and companion, his dog, Carlie.
Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, Debbie; brothers, Dan (Cindy) Longnecker and Rob (Linda) Longnecker; sister-in-law, Barb Longnecker; mother-in-law, Margaret Robinson; brother-in-law, John (Susan) Robinson; sister-in-law, Bobbie (Bill) Rindernecht; and 12 nieces and nephews. Ron is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dave Longnecker; and father-in-law, Frank Robinson.
The Longnecker family would like to thank you for your thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to two of Ron’s favorite charities - the Food Bank of Central Iowa and the Animal Rescue League.
Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines.

Deb, my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of Ron. I so enjoyed playing softball with Ron back in the 80's. He was a tough competitor but a real nice guy and super teammate. I hope and pray that family and friends will surround you and time will lessen the pain of your loss. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Dave King
