Service Details

Doris June Coleman, 95, passed away May 20, 2021 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA.

Doris was born June 4, 1925 in Beardstown, Illinois to Nellie Blye (Jones) and Jefferson Clyde Skiles, and was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Ernest Skiles (wife, Mary and nephew, Stephen A. Skiles).

Growing up, Doris liked to be called by her middle name, June. She attended McKinley High School in Washington D.C. during the last few years of World War II and during her Senior year she was hired on at the newly built Pentagon. She was one of the first 100 employees hired, and attended night school to complete her high school diploma.

June was married to John Richard Coleman who precedes her in death, and who worshipped the ground she walked on. The couple lived in various locations including Miami, FL, Warrenton, VA and Valdosta, GA. In her later years June moved to Virginia and then to Iowa to be closer to her daughters.

She was a social butterfly and could be found volunteering at the hospital, church or Senior Center, or snagging a dance partner to jitterbug, clog or square dance.

June loved all forms of music, but especially show tunes, patriotic music and hymns. She sang in the church choir, played the bells, and also sang in the Valdosta Choir. She taught piano and organ and played for the church and also in a musical group called The Happy Five that traveled to nursing homes and churches to bring toe tapping joy to many people.

June loved all the holidays but especially the patriotic ones. She was devoted to her country, our armed forces and veterans who served.

She is survived by her daughters, Margaret (Bell) Lippincott and Linda (McLean) Sprague; her son, Fred “Benji” Berney McLean; 9 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

Family will host guests on Sunday, September 5th from 2 to 4 p.m. for a memorial celebration at their home in Maxwell, Iowa.

Memorial contributions can be directed in loving memory of Doris June Coleman to the Valdosta Senior Community Center in Valdosta, GA.
