Daryl Wells
May 17, 2021
A lifelong adventure for Daryl Wells ended Monday morning, peacefully and surrounded by his family.
Daryl was born in Brooklyn, Iowa to Lloyd and Jessie Wells. His father, a postmaster and military man, moved the family to Omaha and then to Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where Daryl finished high school near the German Prisoner of War camp that his father managed.
As an Electronics Yeoman in the U.S. Navy Daryl served the submarine Howard W. Gilmore in Key West.
He graduated from Iowa State University’s school of engineering while spending his summer breaks working in the fishing industry in Ketchikan, Alaska.
Daryl began his career as a design engineer for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids and it was there, at a Y picnic that he met the love of his life, Donna Hoss. The two became one in LeMars on December 28, 1957 and they moved to Detroit where their first child was born. They relocated to Fairmont, Minnesota where two more children joined the family and in 1965 he relocated to Sioux City, taking a job with Sioux Tools.
Daryl and Donna lived a life of adventure with their three children, first camping and sailing the small lakes of Iowa and then onto the big lakes up the Missouri River. In the winters he took his family cross country skiing in the woods around Sioux City. In the summers he loved to golf. Daryl was an avid bridge player, he designed and built two of the homes in which he lived and he was a sports car enthusiast, painstakingly restoring and maintaining classic vehicles. He and Donna danced together through life until she passed away in 1998.
Daryl is also preceded in death by his brothers Lloyd and Dick; his sister, Jane; and his granddaughter, Emily. He is survived by a sister, Maxine, of Louisville; his daughters Mary (Terry) Uhl of Overland Park, and Annie (Tom) Mullen of Maxville, Montana; and his son, Jim (Sue) of Bondurant, Iowa; grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
A service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, June 25 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LeMars, followed by interment and a reception at the Sportsman’s Club.
In lieu of flowers his children suggest you gather with your family and friends to celebrate love and life. Daryl was fiercely loved and will be dearly missed by those privileged to know him.
