Service Details

Doris Jennings Barnard passed away on September 30, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Ringgold County, Iowa and was raised in Grand River, Iowa. Doris moved to Des Moines in 1937 where she met her husband, William Berry Barnard. Bill and Doris were married in Mission, Kansas on December 18, 1945, three days after Bill's return from service in World War II. Bill preceded Doris in death in December 1984. She is survived by two children, Jean (Royce) Schweizer and Dennis (Barbara) Barnard both of Des Moines and two granddaughters, Alissa Barnard of Iowa City and Megan Barnard and her fiancé, Mark Rasmussen of West Des Moines.
Doris was the youngest of eight children and was preceded in death by her five brothers, Frank, Ernest, Floyd, Ray and Clark Jennings; and two sisters, Alvina Clayton and Florence Brammer.
Doris worked for Bankers Trust until her retirement in 1977. Later, she volunteered at Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Heather Manor. She enjoyed sewing, flower gardens, hummingbirds, playing cards and word puzzles. She was also quite fond of corresponding with her many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care provided to Doris by the staff of Ramsey Village during her time at this facility.
