Charles Richard Bartel, Jr.

Charles R. Bartel, age 80, passed away at Methodist Hospital on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born the son of Charles Richard and Norma Rue (Jones) Bartel on September 15, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa. Charles attended Davenport High School in May of 1957, and graduated from the Army with his GED. He attended ISU from 1958-1968, IOWA from 1968-1971, then onto Drake Law from 1987-1992, the only one to ever graduate with an A+ Average. He taught at Black Hawk College in Moline and Civil Engineering at Florida State University. He Served in the United States Army at Ft Sill, and The Iowa And Illinois National Guards, with Honorable Discharges from all 3. Charles was a Master of Disaster, of all sorts, through Iowa and Florida State Agencies and FEMA. He was Instrumental in Developing the Emergency Broadcast System, and He was JP and Supervisor for Johnson County. It was his brilliant idea to change unused railroads into bike paths so Park and Rec could fund them instead of Transportation. He Served the Iowa Lawyers Volunteer Project and has helped so many in need. He was a member of Moose and Kiwanis and more than anything, enjoyed time spent with his family. A Hero to All.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 56 years, Melody; children: Shawn (Barbara) Bartel, Shannon Bartel, Heather (Rick) Nell, and Ian (Dora) Bartel, and grandchildren, Melody E., Anjelica (Jay),Alexandria, Amanda, Amber, Chelsy (Dylan), Chaz, Jared, Jacoby, and Tyler. Great-grandchildren; Faith, Charlie, Chris, Wesley, Annica, Ilee, Ashlynn, Aiden, Remy, Lillyana, Amir, Cordelia, William, and Maylin; The Sisters: Suzan Bartel,Karen Bartel, Joann (Steve) Troup, Jolynn Dumoulin and Carlene (Del) Sarlette, also many nieces, nephews and cousins, who were some of his best friends. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son, Richard.

Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Des Moines First Assembly of God (DSM FIRST), 2725 Merle Hay Rd., Des Moines.
