May 03, 2021
Andrew Carl Johnston, 80, passed away May 3, 2021. Services will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA with visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. and the service at 6 p.m. Burial will be on Tuesday, May 11 at Ridgedale Cemetery in Johnston, IA at 1:00 p.m.
Andy was born in Davenport, IA on August 31, 1940. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Marines and proudly served from 1959 to 1964. He later worked for the Des Moines Police Department and retired in 1996.
Andy was always active. He enjoyed square dancing in his younger years and he and his wife were members of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. He was an avid fisherman, gardener, relished playing card games - and was not above cheating. In his retirement years, Andy treasured winters spent in Woody Acres in Fulton, TX. He never missed a chance to have coffee with his buddies or walk his dog and chat with his neighbors. Andy’s faith was strong and he was devoted to attending church.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Donna; children, Jackie (Dave), Darrell “Speedy” (Annie), Mike, Randy (Vida), and Lynette (Maestro); his sister, Deb Smoger; 14 grandchildren; and many beloved great and great-great-grandchildren.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Scott; and siblings, Rodney and Margarite.
The family requests that masks be worn.

We lived in Andys neighborhood in Cabot. He was so great with our kids and they looked forward to him and Missy coming by and feeding her treats. Prayers for you all as you learn to navigate without him!

Andy was a great guy. He truly enjoyed his work as a police officer for the city of Des Moines. He was truly someone who could be relied on to get the job done. He took his job seriously, but never took himself to seriously. He had a great sense of humor. I am sure one of the first things he'll do when he gets to Heaven is look up retired Assistant Chief Tom Teale and play a joke on him.
