Richard Montez Carter
April 17, 2021
A loving husband, father and grandfather Richard Montez Carter began his journey into a life of eternal peace on April 27th, 2021 at the age of 69 years in Des Moines.
Richard was born on May 22, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa to Mary Ann and Clinton Carter. He graduated from Technical High school and studied at Grand View College. He worked 19 years for John Deere as the first and youngest African American welder and later retired from Cement Tech in September 2018. He married Maudine Carter on November 25th, 2004. He’s survived by his 5 children, Ronell, Montel, Ashanti, Richard and Jonathon Carter.
Richard was a renaissance man and truly a jack of all trades. He was a skilled artist, who loved drawing very life like portraits of people. Some of his hobbies included playing the guitar and as a young man writing poetry. He was an avid pool and card player and loved competition. He perfected the art of trash talking at his frequent pool shooting gatherings. He was skilled at home improvement and had the ability to solve any problem that needed fixing. He was a resource for all information because of his extremely high intellect. He was known for his quick wit, and ability to make everyone laugh. Most importantly he was a genuine family man. Spending time with his kids and grandchildren brought him his biggest joy.
Richard was preceded in death by his father Clinton, his mother Mary Ann, and his two sisters Kim and Joanne. He is survived by his wife Maudine, his five children, Montel, Ronell, Ashanti, Richard and Jonathon, as well as his grandchildren, Joshua, Saviyon, Jontez, Meaira, Carter, Braxton, Aria, Hezekiah, Richyah, Elijah, Ramello, Britt, Rayjon, Jace and LaRayah. He is also survived by his brothers, Gary, Clinton, Danny, Fred and Darryl, and his sister Mica, in addition to many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 12 p.m. on Saturday May 8th, 2021 at Hamilton Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, IA. Family will begin greeting guests at 11:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. There will be a reception at the funeral home following the burial.

What a loss, not only to Montel, Ashanti and all of his other family, but also to people like me, who loved him as a brother since the first time we met. What a caring and wonderful person. You guys are in my prayers and he will always be part of my family as well. Love you all and may God bless and keep you during this devastating time. And know, anything I can do for you in the future, it will be in Montez' name.
