Lois Clare Mertes

Lois Clare Mertes, age 74, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her home in West Des Moines.
Lois was born July 18, 1946 in Adair, Iowa to Frederick and Viola (Petri) Mertes. She worked for Principal for 42 years prior to her retirement. Lois was a member of Heartland Presbyterian Church and volunteered with Cross Ministries. She enjoyed recreational softball, walking, and biking. Above all, Lois treasured time spent with her family.
She is survived by her siblings, Ardith Harris, John Mertes, Carol Shaw, Charles (Suzan) Mertes, and Dean Mertes; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Viola Mertes; brother-in-law, Lloyd Harris; nephew, Thomas Harris; nieces, Amanda and Rachel Shaw; great-nephew, Keegan Meyer; and great-great-nephew, Luka Hodges.
There will be a celebration of life on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Heartland Presbyterian Church, 14300 Hickman Road, Clive, IA 50325, beginning at 1:30 p.m. There will be at dessert reception after the service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Heartland Presbyterian Church or to Cross Ministries, 3226 University Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50311, in loving memory of Lois.

I have fond memories of my sisters and I playing with Lois and her siblings in Adair and as a classmate at A-C. I appreciated very much her thoughtfulness at the time of my mothers death. Sincere condolences to the Mertes family.

I worked with Lois at PFG a long time ago. Later on we would occasionally bump into each other at the grocery store and get caught up.
I really liked Lois and appreciated her general enthusiasm. I am very sorry to hear of your loss.

I am so so sorry for the loss of Lois. Very shocked when I read about her passing. I went to school with Lois and very much enjoyed her athleticism and just visiting with her. Gone too soon. Please know that my thoughts & prayers are with the family at this difficult time.
