Phyllis Nagel Martin, 73, passed peacefully into the hands of her Father in Heaven surrounded by her children on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
Phyllis was born on April 27, 1936 in Rochester, Minnesota, to Lee Raymond Nagel and Edna Broadwater Nagel of Greenleafton, MN.
Phyllis graduated from Preston High School in 1954 and furthered her education at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas, before graduating from Central College, Pella, Iowa, in 1958. She taught home economics in Tripoli, Marble Rock, and Cresco, Iowa, and was always a passionate advocate of life-long learning.
Phyllis was a woman of great strength and abundant gifts. She enjoyed many things but most especially her children and grandchildren. She had a love for music which she instilled in her children, exposing them to the joys of great music at a young age, and cherishing every opportunity to attend their
performances. Of her many delights, most precious to her was spending time with her grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Cory (Cassie) Martin of Frisco, TX; her daughter, Amy (Joshua) Burke of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren, Corinna Martin and Caleb Burke; many cousins and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Allen Nagel and her parents, Lee and Edna Nagel.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, IA. The committal service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Greenleafton Cemetery in Greenleafton, MN. A visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at Hamilton's
near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be made to Root River Church of the Brethren Cemetery Fund or the Greenleafton Reformed Church Cemetery Fund in loving memory of Phyllis.
