Merlene Akes

Merlene (Long) Akes, also known as Midge to many, was born on December 6, 1943 in Ottumwa, IA to Merle and Bessie Long. She passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021 peacefully at home.
Merlene was known for her feistiness and generosity. She enjoyed cooking and baking – her homemade noodles, potato buns, and Christmas cookies and fudge were unmatched! Some of her favorite things to do were crafts, playing cards and bingo, and watching game shows. Above all, she loved her family and cherished the time she spent with them enjoying pool parties and holiday celebrations, especially Christmas.
She will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Gary of nearly 60 years; her daughter, Debbie (Rick) Hamblin; daughter-in-law, Deanna (Darin) Bennigsdorf; grandchildren: TJ Akes, Zachary (Savanna) Akes, Heather (Grant) Horton, Randi Webb, Todd Hamblin, Jennifer Ingram; great grandchildren: George Akes, Brooklyn and Clara Akes, Bryher Horton, and Maya Ingram; brother-in-law, Don Akes; sister-in-law, Janeeda Long; and several nieces and nephews.
Merlene was preceded in death by her parents, Merle and Bessie Long; brother, Melvin Long; and her son, Anthony (Tony) Akes.
There will be a private family service.

I grew up nextdoor to Merlene. She was like a second mom. She was a wonderful lady and I will treasure the time she was in my life and all the good memories. My prayers go out to her and all of the Family. Keeping you all in my thoughts.
