Richard “Rich” VanGundy, age 52, passed away on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Taylor House Hospice. He was born the son of Richard and Sandra VanGundy on October 31, 1968 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Rich graduated from East High School, Class of 1986. After graduation he began work as a general laborer and was a member of Laborers Union #177. Rich was a true outdoorsman, he loved fishing, mushroom hunting, and swimming. He enjoyed playing darts, watching NASCAR, and taking care of his cars over the years. Rich will be remembered most by his great sense of humor and playing jokes on people. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maria; sons, Dillon (Baylie) VanGundy and Gage VanGundy; grandson, Joey Hampton; mother and step-father, Sandy and Jerry Jacobs; father-in-law, Paul and Star McConnell; brother, Donny Young; sister, Darla Boffeli; nephew, Brandon Boffeli; niece, Ashley Boffeli; and great-niece, Abby Boffeli.

Rich was preceded in death by his father, Richard “Dick” VanGundy; and mother-in-law, Dolly McConnell.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.
