Service Details

Our loving grandmother On Bac Thi passed away on Wednedsay, April 7, 2021 just one day after her 92nd birthday that she got to virtually celebrate with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On was born in Sonla, Vietnam on April 6, 1929 to Pham and Lain Baccam. She married her husband, Lanh Vanlo, in 1943 and they then migrated to Vientiane, Laos, where they adopted their daughters and son. With their family, they migrated to Nong Khai, Thailand in 1972 to a refugee camp to escape the Vietnam War where they spent seven years. In 1979, they were sponsored to come to Des Moines, Iowa. After being in the states for a year and learning little English, she worked at Parr Manufacturing until 1986. On made the decision to quit after her first grandson turned one to be his care taker.

On devoted her life to her grandchildren and enjoyed needle work from sewing her own clothing, cross stitch to hand embroidery. She loved tending to her garden, cooking, playing cards with her friends, and just being outdoors soaking in the sun. On always had a huge smile on her face that would light up a room and was a happy go lucky person who never had anything negative to say.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Choi (Vilay) Lovan; daughters, Bit Cathi, Hack Cathi, and Tient (Khoung) Nguyen; grandchildren, Kevin Lovan, Katy Lovan and Jacklyn (Lucas) White; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Ailani; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

On is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Lanh; four sisters; and her parents.

On will be interred at Glendale Cemetery in the Tai Dam Section at a later time.
