Shirley M. Hinrichs
April 06, 2021
Shirley Marie Hinrichs, 81, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2021.
Shirley was born June 7, 1939 in Avon Lake, Iowa to Glenn and Opal (Smalley) McDougal. She worked as a medical administrator for Mercy Medical Center for many years. She was a 1958 graduate of Altoona High School where she was in the Senior Play, on the annual staff, and an office worker.
She also owned and operated a square dance apparel store for 9 years with her husband, Ed. They organized many fun bus trips to square dance conventions and other outings. She was a people person, there was never a stranger to her, she would light up any room she walked into with her down-home charm and charisma. Many lovingly called her “Mom”.
She is survived by her sons, Steven, Michael (and Sherri), and Jeffrey (and Ellen); foster son, Tim; six grandsons, Matthew, Andrew, Kain, Justin, Joe, and Jacob; and three great grandchildren, Brayden, Nolen and Addison. She is also survived by her brother, Richard (and Mary Ann) and her sister, Kathy (and Marshall).
Shirley was preceded in death by her mother Opal, her father Glenn, her brother Jackie (infant), and her husband Harold.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021, also at Hamilton’s, and will conclude with interment at Altoona Cemetery, Altoona, Iowa.
If people wish to make a memorial contribution, it may be directed to the family for a future designation to honor Shirley.

My condolences for the entire family. I knew Shirley only through my times attending Abracorndabra magic convention, but enjoyed a number of conversations with her. It will not be the same there without her.
