Service Details

Con Hamborg passed away peacefully on April 2, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 7, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa, Con was the only child of LaVern and Audra Hamborg. He graduated from East High School and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended the University of Iowa and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He graduated from Iowa in February of 1950 and married Jeannette Heaberlin one week later. He was employed by Connecticut General Life Insurance Company for 30 years, retiring as district group manager for Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Following his retirement, he and Jeannette spent the next 20 winters selling real estate, playing golf, and enjoying time with friends in Naples, Florida.

Con learned to play golf while caddying at Grandview Golf Course at the age of 10
where he earned seventy-five cents per round with a twenty-five cent tip for doing a good job. He was a longtime member and served on the board at Des Moines Golf and
Country Club. He was also a member of Bears Paw Country Club in Naples where he
was a board member and president. He shot his age at 73 and had six holes in one during his golfing days. He shared his love of golf with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Con was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a thirty-second degree mason. He was
also a member of the Za Ga Zig Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters, The Breakfast Club,
and the Des Moines Pioneer Club.

Faith was an important part of Con’s life. He was baptized, confirmed, and married at
First Lutheran Church in Des Moines and later joined Lutheran Church of Hope.

He was a loyal friend, loving husband, and the best father and Grampy. He was an avid
sports fan and especially loved following his Hawkeyes and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Our favorite memories with him include tailgates at Hawkeye football games, golf cart rides, spirited ping pong matches, and walleye fishing and cribbage at his family cabin on Lake Vermilion in northern Minnesota. He was cherished by many and will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Con is survived by Jeannette, his wife of 71 years; sons, Peter and Kelly (Carla);
daughter, Jennie (Randy); five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Meg, Anne, Maddie, and Jack;
and three great-grandchildren, Caroline, Connor, and Cade.

Con’s family would like to thank the outstanding staff of Edgewater Health Care Center
and WesleyLife Hospice for their compassionate care.

A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to Lutheran Church of Hope, the Edgewater Good Samaritan Fund or the
University of Iowa Foundation. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
