Abelina "Abbie" Gorshel

Abelina Gorshel, 87, passed away March 25, 2021. Services will be held Monday, April 5, 2021 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA at 12:00 noon with visitation prior from 11:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. Abbie will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery.
Abbie was born on May 8, 1933 in Buffalo Center, IA to Mary and Blas Ortega. She graduated from Lincoln High School and then the Americana School of Beauty. She and her 4 children from a previous marriage, married Steve Gorshel in 1963 and were blessed with two more. Abbie was a stylist at Francois and retired from JC Penney. She enjoyed flowers, painting, cooking and entertaining - her enchiladas were unmatched! Abbie cherished her time spent at the Westside Senior Center in Valley Junction connecting with her friends and playing Bingo, and was a member of St. Francis. Abbie had a generous heart and spirit and adored her family.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Daniel Martinez of Los Angeles, CA, Michael (Joanna) Martinez of West Des Moines, IA, Debra (Brian) Riedesel of Cumming, IA, Rick (Debra) Martinez of West Des Moines, IA and Mitchell (Joyce) Gorshel of Urbandale, IA; her siblings, David and Richard Ortega, Delores Hunt, Dr. Ramona Ortega-Liston, Lidia Moore and Mary Ellen (John) Landsberger.
Abbie was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Gorshel; their daughter, Melissa Gorshel; and brothers, Belen and John Ortega.

Our favorite memories of spending Christmas with Abbie were her beautifully decorated presents! And like those gifts, she was beautiful inside and out.

I've known Abbie since childhood. She was the nicest person in the neighborhood, always great to be at her house playing with Mitch, and thank you for babysitting for me a few times. Loved her cooking! Bless you.
