Elza "Smitty" Smith

Elza Smith, 85, passed away on March 7, 2021 at Mercy Hospital.

Elza was born March 10, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa to Elza and Katherine (Gottshall) Smith. He was a Substation Technical Engineer with Iowa Power for 43 years. Elza was a volunteer fire fighter for the Bloomfield Township Fire Dept. for many years. He was a member of the Isaac Walton League. Elza enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, gambling, slot machines and playing pool.

Elza is survived by his children, Vance Smith and Christine (Rodney) Kubik; grandchildren, Megan Parrott, Maddison Smith, Stephanie Kubik (fiancé, Brandon Decker) and Ashley Kubik; brother, Alvin (Lena) Smith; former spouse, Penny Smith; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Louise Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2021 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Elza will be laid to rest with military honors at Elm Grove Cemetery.
