Jerry Roberts
March 08, 2021
Jerry Roberts, 76, of Urbandale passed away on Monday, March 8, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 13, 1944 in Marshalltown, IA to Harry and Charlotte Roberts. His youth was spent growing up on the family farm in Laurel, with his brother Bob. He graduated from Laurel Community School in 1962 and went on to get a BAE degree at Wayne State College, followed by a master’s degree at Drake University.
In 1973, when he married his wife Judy, she brought two children into his life, Teri and Tim. They called him Dad and he called them his children and raised them as his own.
After graduation from college, Jerry taught and coached at BGM High School. Upon the sudden death of his father, he returned to the farm and continued with farming for 15 years. He loved the fall harvest and raising Charolais cattle. The little white calves running out in the green grass were a joy to watch. The smell of hog manure he did not love! The involvement of government in the farming business is what drove him out of farming and back to education. With his master’s degree he became a high school counselor at Baxter, East Marshall and Earlham. His passion was helping kids find a career path appropriate for them.
For the past eight years Jerry lived with an LVAD (left ventricular device). He was the first one to return to Des Moines after surgery for rehab after his LVAD. He was always willing to talk to other congestive heart failure patients and show them how he lived with an LVAD. In addition to the donation of tissue and bone, his heart has been donated for research in hopes of helping others.
His interests were following the kids and grandkid’s sports, collecting Ted Williams memorabilia and attending Drake basketball games. Most of his friends will remember him for his one-liners.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Teri (Mike) Salach of Overland Park, KS and Tim (Anne) Roberts of Golden, CO; and three grandchildren, Taylor, Jennifer and David.
Due to COVID, there will be a private service on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Freedom for Youth Ministries.

Be advised, this post bears sad news.
It is with deep sadness that Jerry Roberts died peacefully of heart failure on Monday, March 8th. Heavenly Father welcomed him home today.
They say friends are the family we choose. Being chosen was the greatest moment of my life and when Jerry passed, it was the worst moment of my life.
Saying goodbye isn't for us. Instead, I will say that I look forward to seeing my friend again, each time I am reminded of Jerry through a phrase, a joke, even an article of clothing. These are the things that will keep us close despite death.
May you be as blessed in the next life, my friend, as I was in this one by knowing you.
RIP Jerry....

So sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. He will always be special in our memories of family members and neighbors. I could write a book of all the antics about Jerry and Bob when they were young and in their grown years. One particular one about an old pickup truck they were "fixing" no body just frame and an old five gallon bucket for the front seat- farm kids always had the best times-God Bless-love you all.

So sorry to hear about this! Im a 1990 graduate from Baxter and I could not have had a better counselor!! Being a farm kid myself we always had great conversations and he always let you say what you wanted about anything and then he would give his feedback! He was always one of the few teachers that I will always remember and comes up in our conversations to this day! So sorry for your loss, however just remember lots of us former students will never forget him!!!!!

I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear of Mr. Roberts passing. He was such a great man and a very influential figure in my life. He was a major reason that I chose to pursue a career in education. I am in my 7th year as a High School Principal in a northern suburb of Denver, Co and I think often about my time at East Marshall and the impact of Mr. Roberts. He was a wonderful person and I am so glad he was a part of my life.
