Service Details

Jerald (Jerry) Hein, 80, was born December 26, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa, the only child of Neva Mae (Butcher) Hein and Harold August Hein. Jerry passed away March 4, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, after a lengthy illness.
Jerry was a long-time resident of South Des Moines, a 1959 graduate of Lincoln High and member of their swim and baseball teams. He was the proud owner of Hein Lawn Mower & Saw Service, and former member of the South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce.
Jerry was married to Betty Lou Duncan for 41 years until she passed in 2002. Jerry and Betty moved to Carlisle, IA in 1970 where they raised two children on an acreage next to his parent’s farm. Jerry loved horseback riding and working off-hours on the family farm.
“Jed” and Rebecca VanLaw Ogden were forever friends and married in 2008. There was lots of fun sharing a few years in retirement, but the fun was slowly overtaken by the challenges of aging and they couldn’t do the traveling they had hoped for.
Jerry’s passions were his family, hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and golf. The family spent many weekends at Lake Rathbun. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, collecting Budweiser beer steins and watching old westerns, especially John Wayne’s. He had an amazing sense of humor and never met a stranger. He truly enjoyed people and telling stories for hours. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.
Jerry is survived by his wife Becky and two children, son Craig (Penny) Hein and daughter Shari Fransen (Barry Cermak); three grandchildren, Chad (Cortney) Hein, Tyler Fransen, and Cortney (Tommy) Miller; three great-grandchildren, Kaden, Hadley and Addison; two step-children, Lisa Johnson and Mark (Angela) Ogden; 8 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; best friends Jim & Mary Myers; his furry sidekick, Miss Halle; and a large circle of extended family and friends. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, first wife, son-in-law Jim Fransen, and step-son Michael Ogden.
There will be a private graveside service.
