Helen Dickerson
March 04, 2021
Helen Dickerson, 101, passed away on March 4, 2021. She was born April 4, 1919 in Fairfield, Iowa to DeLafayette and Patti (Leutzinger) Cleveland.
Helen loved being a wife and mother. She was small but her presence was always known. Helen was an exceptional cook and could make anything taste good. She will be especially remembered for her chicken and noodles, brownies, and rhubarb pie. Helen oozed strength, confidence, resilience and a hint of stubbornness (OK, maybe a lot of stubbornness). She was very talented musically. As a teenager, Helen and Eugene regularly performed at the Younker’s Tea Room and up to a couple of years ago, she would delight family and friends with songs while playing her ukulele or keyboard. She excelled in numerous arts and crafts, too many to mention. One of her greatest traits was not being afraid to try something new. When she wasn’t breaking out spontaneously in song, she loved spending time with her family at their cabin on Clear Lake.
She is survived by her children, William (Jacque), Richard (Lynn) and Thomas (Leslie) Miller; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; brother, Eugene Cleveland; and nephew, Herb Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Miller and Lewis Dickerson; grandson, Gantry Miller; granddaughter, Debbie Miller; brother, Robert Cleveland; and sister, Ruth Buchanan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.

We so enjoyed Helens company and positive attitude when she and Lewis shared a table with our mom Margaret at Legacy Point. Nothing could keep her from an activity or church service. On the day of her second husbands funeral, Helen returned to Legacy Point with loads of beautiful flowers. After running out of places to set them, my sister and I offered to take them to rooms of her friends. She was generous with all who knew her and always encouraging mom to do more (mom was 12 years younger!) May your family be comforted by memories of Helens most excellent life and razor sharp mind. God Bless you all. Sara Burke and Carolyn Bachtell

Helen had a positive and welcoming attitude for anyone who visited Legacy Pointe Independent and Assisted Living facility.
It's not easy living to be over 100, I would guess, but Helen was proud and happy.
She will take her joy and music on to her ever lasting home in heaven. (My husband, Leonard, was in skilled care almost three years and we had opportunity to be where Helen frequented.) Thank you for sharing her with us. God Bless, Linda O'Hair
