Donald Shoemaker, Jr.

Donald Shoemaker, Jr., 83, passed away on March 1, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center Downtown.

Don was born October 21, 1937 to Donald and Hazel Shoemaker, Sr. in Des Moines. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1955. He served in the Air National Guard for 10 years. He retired from Gilcrest Jewett in 2000, where he worked as a carpenter for many years.

He enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting and helping people. Don had a love of God and enjoyed spending time with his family and attending all of his grandchildren’s events.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Sue Shoemaker; son, Donnie (Jayna) Shoemaker; sister, Marilynn (David) Hoskins; grandchildren, Donna (Matt) Swanson, Nichole Shoemaker and Elizabeth Shoemaker; great-grandchildren, Jimmy Philipsen, Skyla Philipsen and Charley Swanson; and a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family will greet friends and family from 2 pm to 4pm Sunday, March7, 2021 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Monday, March 8, 2021 at the funeral home. Donald will be laid to rest at Elm Grove Cemetery, 6501 Indianola Ave, Des Moines.
