Paul Leroy Carico, age 100, passed away Monday, March 1, 2021 at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines with his family by his side.

Paul was born July 13, 1920 in Cedar, Iowa to Willard and Violet Carico. He was one of 13 children. He had a love of the outdoors from an early age. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps to help support his family. Paul proudly served in the United States Navy as a torpedoman from January 10, 1941 to December 3, 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Hornet and Drayton. He married LaVona “Toni” Harris on August 12, 1945 and to this union two children were born. He worked in transportation as a truck driver for many years, retiring from Gamble Robinson at the age of 55. Paul made the most of his retirement by hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. He loved supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their various sporting events. He also spent a lot of time morel mushroom hunting with his daughter. He will be remembered as a very kind and loving man.

He is survived by his daughter, Georgeanna Hibbert (Rodger Bruce); granddaughters, Heather (Jeff) Osborn and Holly (Jayson) Winkelman; grandsons, Tony (Anita) Carico and Brian (Dawn) Carico; great-grandchildren, Jade and Josie Osborn, Jaxson and Rylee Winkelman, and Kaylea, Kortni, and Kate Carico; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, LaVona; son, Paul Jr.; great-grandson, Cameron; and his parents and all his siblings.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the services.
