Kelle Sickerson
February 27, 2021
Kelle Sickerson passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on February 27, 2021, at the age of 52.
Kelle was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Her life of humor and wit, infinite love, and example of courage and strength under any circumstance are among the greatest gifts that her family and friends will forever cherish.
Kelle graduated from Newton High School in 1986 and from LaJames College of Hairstyling in 1987. She worked alongside her father for many years until his retirement, and then she worked at Iowa State University in the Veterinary Medicine Department.
Kelle was an active leader for her daughters’ Girl Scout troop and 4H Club, the Elkhart Rising Suns. She valued time spent with them showing cattle and pigs as well as project judging at the Polk County Fair.
Kelle had a special place in her heart for all animals…except birds. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and listening to music, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her loved ones.
Kelle is survived by her husband, Joe Sickerson; daughters, Jayme and Katie Sickerson; parents, Lynette and Mike Nelson; sister, Jenny (Todd) Birkenholtz; niece and nephew, McKayla (fiancé, Jacob Peake) and Keller Birkenholtz; as well as other loving family and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Marie Seiler and Emma Sickerson; and her uncle and aunt, Fred and Marge Nelson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 8, 2021, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines with burial to follow at Cory Grove Cemetery in Elkhart. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. Out of respect for the family and others, masks and social distancing will be encouraged.
As a tribute to Kelle, please wear pink or bright colored attire.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a future designation or to UnityPoint Hospice-Taylor House, in loving memory of Kelle.

I had the pleasure of working with Kelle at Iowa State University over the last few years and am heartbroken to learn of her passing. From the time I first met Kelle, it was clear what a caring individual she was, through the personal conversations we would have about our loved ones together. I will remember her smile and laughter as two of her most cherished assets and will miss her dearly. I pray for her family, whom I did not know, that they find strength in the lessons she left us and peace in her passing.

I am so sorry to hear about Kelle. I hadn't talked to her since I had Jayme and Katie in First Grade. That's been many years. What a sweet person Kelle was. She was always concerned about the feelings of her girls, and caring for them, a loving mom. I pray that you all will feel surrounded with God's peace and love. Martha Sheldahl

I worked with Kelle at ISU CVM, and I cannot tell you what a joy it was to work with her. While working there I had a few health problems as a young adult, and she was always the first one to ask how I was doing, and she always made a point to check in with me. She was so caring, humble, and sincere, and we will truly miss her at the college. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

A kinder, more caring person you would be hard pressed to find. Anywhere.
