Cecil F. Cook
February 17, 2021
Cecil boarded his last train on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the age of 90. Cecil was born on December 14, 1930 to Ida Mae (Pratt) and Jasper Ward Cook on the family farm just outside Waukon, Iowa. Growing up he was very involved in the FFA doing several demonstrations at the Iowa State Fair. After graduating from Waukon High as valedictorian he farmed with his older brother Charles until 1954. In 1954 he married the love of his life, Imogene (Jean) Hegwood of Des Moines. Cecil and Jean were blessed with four children that they raised in Des Moines and in 1964 moved their family into the house they planned and had built in Pleasant Hill. They were married for 62 years until Jean passed in 2017.
Over the years Cecil worked for General Mills, the City of Pleasant Hill and Hy-Vee, until his retirement in 1995. He was very involved in his community. He was a past member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Dept., former City Councilman, serving some time in 1968 as Mayor pro tem when the Mayor had health issues. He was a past member of the Moose and Elks lodges. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Pleasant Hill Lions Club, serving on the scholarship selection committee. He also coached Little League Baseball for a number of years.
Cecil was also very active in his church, Staves Memorial United Methodist Church of which he was a member for over 67 years. Over that time, he served as a Lay Leader, President of the Staves Board and an Adult Class Sunday School teacher, a role he still held. He thought it important to be at Church every Sunday, and even with the bad weather made it to services just a few weeks before his passing.
Other than his love of faith, family and community service, his other great love was photographing, writing and researching railroads and mining, particularly those in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Beginning in 1947 when he took his first photograph of a steam locomotive, this love of railroading would be his passion for the rest of his life. He was the published Author of six books on railroad history (was working on book 7 at the time of his death) and his photographs have been published in numerous books and magazines and journals by other Authors. As a recognized Author and Historian on railroad history he was asked to present to numerous historical societies and historical events around Iowa and the Midwest. All family vacations were planned around his obsession with railroading and most years when we were kids involved trips to Colorado, Minnesota, and the UP of Michigan. In 1953 he was a founding member of the Iowa Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. He was also a longtime member of the Milwaukee Road Historical Society, Missabe Railroad Historical Society and the Lake States Railway Historical Association and the Mining Historical Association.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2021, also at Hamilton’s. Services will conclude with a private family burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.

Cecil was very important to us here at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad as he presented several times over the years for our yearly guest speaking programs. His programs were always eagerly anticipated and his photography spectacular. Every time you visited with Cecil you knew you were speaking with someone who had an incredible love of Iowa railroad history as he lived it. He is sorely missed here at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad and was a good friend.

To Archie and all of Cecil's family: I much appreciated Cecil's time and interest in helping to identify some steam locomotives for a photography book I was working on. His knowledge was certainly impressive. What an active and well rounded life he accomplished.

To all the Cook families: We were sorry to hear of Cecil's death. We have been "neighbors and friends" in Pleasant Hill for over 50 years. Cecil and Dick were on the fire department together, and you hardly ever so Cecil without Jean. Really nice people even though Karen and Cecil had many friendly discussions, Jean just shook her head at them. He will be missed. We are proud to say that we have 1 of his autographed books. Our hearts and prayers go out to you all.

My sincere condolences to the family of Cecil Cook. I met him at the LADOS meetings I attended after the death of my spouse. He was a very fine gentleman and will be greatly missed. I didn't know of his many accomplishments and wish I'd gotten to know him better. Heaven is a better place for him being in it! Carole Jean Larson

To the family of Cecil, I am so terribly sorry to hear of his passing. Growing up at Staves Church, Jean was my Sunday school teacher but I didn't know Cecil as well early on. When I got a bit older though, we bonded over our mutual enjoyment of British TV shows on PBS. I also remember that he used to wear a tie clip to church with a train on it, which I thought was neat. One time, as a teenager, I inadvertently ended up in Cecil's adult Sunday school class, and for some reason he was talking about traveling by rail to Washington and Oregon. I thought that was so neat, that he and Jean traveled by rail. I had no idea though how deep his knowledge of the railroad truly was until 2009. At the time, I was beginning a project on Iowa ghost towns and railroad communities. I called Cecil to ask if he could help with some of my research...and could he ever! Thus began a new chapter in our friendship. Over the years Cecil and I visited several times to discuss the railroad, coal mining communities (Old Carbondale and Youngstown among them), and Iowa history. He had an endless supply of information and astounding recall! This past year, right before the pandemic, I had the chance to visit with him again. We had coffee and I I purchased a number of books he'd authored, including "The Final Steam Years," which he even autographed for me! As we visited, our conversation changed from railroads to current events and the importance of community. It was one of the most meaningful visits I've ever had and we ended up talking for hours. During the pandemic, I kept in touch, sending Cecil cards and the occasional old fashioned letter. I especially wanted him to know how much our four year old enjoyed looking at the pictures in his books. My world is a little darker this morning, but it is infinitely better for having Cecil as a friend. Godspeed Cecil until we'll meet again someday and thank you for everything!

With Cecil's trademark mustache he was the most dapper railroad historian I have known! Cecil will be dearly missed in the Iowa and mining railroad community! My heart felt condolences go out to the family and to Archie who was Cecil's A/V companion at his presentations.

Cecil was a great guy who I visited with at train shows . He always was happy to share his thoughts on railroads past and was a fine author of several railroad books I own. Take care friend!
