Margaret Chism, age 73, passed away at her home on February 17, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was born the daughter of Walter and Ruthie Cockrell on November 15, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Margaret attended Des Moines Tech and graduated in 1965. She worked for Urban Dreams, the City of Des Moines, and worked many years at Prairie Meadows. Margaret enjoyed doing puzzles, sewing, spending time at the casino, playing cards, and baking, especially her famous pineapple upside down cake. Margaret will be remembered most for her caring heart and her willingness to help others in need. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include her children, Oneda (Leslie Howard) Chism, Willie (Adrienne) Chism, Jr., and Angela Chism; grandchildren, Marlo (Sara), Marshay, Devontay, Taylor, and DeAngelo; great-grandchildren, Ontané and Aaliyah; siblings, Harriett (David) Colton and Ruth Cockrell; nieces and nephews, Frances, Frank, Nicole, and Vance; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Sharon Cockrell.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 22, 2021 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

I loved hearing you laugh. I loved seeing your eyes light up when you were with your family. Thank you for loving me as your own. Thank you for showing Marlo what it was like to have a big heart. Margaret volunteered to help with the fish fries on Fridays during Lent at the Basilica of St. John. She was such a sweet and gentle lady. Prayers to her entire family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Maggie for over 20 years and I have never met a sweeter, kinder person. She loved to tell me about her family and what was going on with all of you. I have tremendous, wonderful memories of her and love her so much. My heart breaks but I know that she is rejoicing in heaven. Prayers for comfort and peace to you all.
