Rick Burns
February 10, 2021
Rick Dwain Burns passed away at home, surrounded by his loved ones after a valiant battle with cancer, on February 10, 2021.
Born May 25, 1950 in Des Moines, Ia., Rick lived most of his youth in Southern California, but returned to live and raise his family in Des Moines in 1992. Rick served in the U. S. Navy 1969-71, during his tour of duty, he served on the fast attack submarine, USS Haddock. After military service, he became a carpenter by trade and retired after 30 years from Carpenter's Local Union 106. He married his best friend, Jeri, in 1982 and together, they had 2 sons.
Rick was happiest spending quality time with his family. He often said his greatest joy in life were his sons and he was so proud knowing they all grew up to be such good men. He was a loving and doting grandpa to his grandchildren, who called him “Pop-o”, but he also loved playing his guitars, gardening, fishing, and playing with his pet dogs. Rick loved just watching the world go by and he would often be seen waving to friends and neighbors from his chair on his front porch. He was a believer in helping others when he could and was patron of the ARL and Wounded Warriors associations.
Rick will be remembered by family and friends as a man of few words, but when he spoke, the words were important and well considered. He believed in living honestly and in good conscience and in leaving this world better for having been in it.
He is survived by his wife, Jeri, and his sons, Cory D. Burns (Crystal), Ian P. Burns, his stepson, Rob Eames (Laura), and his grandchildren, Ariadne and Gibson Burns and Emily Eames.
He was predeceased by his parents, Roy D. and Doris Burns.
There will be a private funeral, followed by his internment at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Adel, Ia.

My very sincere condolences to your entire family. Rick was not only a good mentor to me as a carpenter, I am proud to have known him as a friend outside of work. RIP.

My heart aches for the loss of a kind, loving, and nurturing man to so many. Although our paths moved in a different direction through the years, I will always value the friendship and the love you provided. Some people you believe will be here forever, Rick, you were that one, RIP. You will always be loved. I will be praying for Jeri and the boys as they learn this new life.
