Herbert A. Hicks, Sr.
February 06, 2021
Herbert Hicks, Sr. passed away on February 6, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born to Cyrus and Olivia Hicks on February 19, 1931, the youngest of six children.
Herb was a proud East High graduate. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 27th Reg. Wolfhounds from 1951-1953 during the Korean War.
Herb was a member of the Boline-Manfredi VFW Post 9662, Local 347 Electrical Union, and Masonic Lodge. He served as a Saylor Township trustee and was a representative to the 11th District IBEW.
Herbie was an interesting character and that’s what made him special and great. A devoted family man, you would always spot him standing and supporting his children and grandchildren during their various events and activities. His life’s focus and greatest enjoyment was his children and grandchildren.
“Herb Hicks from the sticks” loved watching Westerns, and engaging people in conversation about his grandchildren, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and politics. Herb’s family knew during Hawkeye games there would be a play-by-play phone conversation with lifetime friend, Scotty. Members of the community recognized Herbie and his Hawkeye truck as he drove through the neighborhood honking and waving.
Herb is survived by his children, Debbie (Bill) Castro, Tish (Jeff) Hayes, Buddy (Cindy) Hicks, and Shelly (Al) Stoppel; grandchildren: Jaime Black, Levi Castro, Julianne Castro, Riley (Jake) Speer, Alex Hicks, Christopher (Elizabeth) Hicks, Gabriel (Emily) Hicks, and Cody (Ashley) Stoppel; great-grandchildren, Braelyn and Conner Stoppel; as well as many nieces, nephews, other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sandy; his parents, Cyrus and Olivia, and five siblings.
A graveside service will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date.
