Nicholas Samuel Romano, 91, died on January 22, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Nick’s death was the result of an earlier fall on January 14th.

Nick was born on May 25, 1929 and was a lifelong resident of the “South Side” of Des Moines. After graduating from Dowling High School, Nick worked for Meredith Publishing Company. While employed at Meredith, Nick received his draft notification and honorably served our country in Korea as an infantryman in the United States Army. Upon his return from Korea, Nick served the city of Des Moines as a Fire Fighter for 40 years retiring at the rank of District Chief. Nick also worked as a stagehand, was an active member of the Stage Local #67 and was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.

Nick is survived by his wife, Clara Lee (Sassatelli) Romano, the love of his life for 66 years; four sons, Joseph (Janie), Nicholas (Kate), Mark (Pam), and John (Lisa); ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; sister, Theresa (Frances Schlueter); and sister-in-law, Jenny Stefani.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Julia; brothers-in-law, Nello Stefani and Ferdinand Sassatelli; and sister-in-law, Joanne Sassatelli.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 29, 2021 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., rosary will follow starting at 10:00 a.m., and Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. all at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Nick will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery. The family respectfully requests that all guests wear masks and practice social distancing.
