Vivian Fern Culbertson
January 16, 2021
Vivian Fern (Palmer) Culbertson of West Des Moines, IA was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at the age of 100.
Vivian was born on July 19, 1920 to David and Tena (Ball) Palmer outside of Garber, Iowa. She was the 5th child of 9. Vivian taught three years in a one room school-house in Clayton County, IA before marrying Lee Culbertson on January 1, 1942 in Kirksville, MO. Vivian and Lee lost their twins, Garth and Garland, shortly after their birth in 1944 and in 1948 their daughter, Linda Lou, died during childbirth. In 1953, Vivian and Lee welcomed their only living child, Robert.
Vivian loved God and her family. She was proud of her son’s ministry and loved to hear his sermons. Her grandchildren were so very special to her and they loved spending time at Lee and Vivian’s farm outside of Edgewood, IA. After Lee’s death Vivian moved to West Des Moines to be closer to Bob and Julia, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.
Vivian left a mark on those she met with her kindness, generosity and joyful smile. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, her church family, and playing cards.
Family left to cherish her memory are her son, Bob and daughter-in-law Julia Culbertson; her three grandchildren, Jeni (Dustin) Dooley, Chris (Kayce) Culbertson, and Betsy (Ryan) DeHaan; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Hoth of Neosho, MO and Etta Wilson of Cedar Rapids, IA; and her brother, Kenny (Joyce) Palmer of Lakeland, FL.
Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; three infant children; parents; and siblings, Glenn Palmer, Zala Werger, Ivanelle Powell, Del Palmer, and Dick Palmer.
Memorial contributions may be made to Windsor UMC in Windsor Heights, IA or Trinity UMC in Edgewood, IA.
Private family services will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood, IA. The service will be available to be livestreamed at the Trinity UMC at Edgewood, Iowa Facebook page.

Vivian was a lovely person; she was my Mother's next door neighbor and they shared many happy times recalling the days they both were farm wives; and Mother and I both considered her a dear, sweet friend. She had an extensive collection of angels and she is now with the Heavenly Father and she is certainly one of his newest angels in his house. We will miss her so very much. Bob and Julie please accept our sympathy in the loss of your dear Mother. You both were so loving and caring of "your" Mother and she loved you both so much and she loved our Lord. God bless and comfort you in the days to come.

Vivian was a loving and caring person who will be greatly missed by friends and family. I loved watching the great grandchildren rushing to her to get quarters to give at church. Her eyes just beamed with love. Love you, Vivian!

Bob, Julie, and family,
The love you shared wih your cherished Vivian, has left a memory in my heart that will last forever. Too, the precious days I shared with Viv, and thank you for, will be everlasting. She was a beloved Christian, proud Mom, and loved making gifts for you, her family. Viv's love for baking and sharing sweets is a sweet memory, too. Knowing Viv is in the care of our Lord, brings peace, as her soul is with Jesus, just like she asked for.

I was so sorry to hear of Viv's passing. She was such a beautiful person, and I so enjoyed spending time with her. Our common interest in quilting brought us together and with her many years of quilting experience, she taught this novice quilter a lot. When I worked at Windsor UMC, and she was in the church, she would always stop by my office to say "hi". I sure miss those chats. May you rest in peace, Viv.
