Stephen Pope
January 12, 2021
On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, Stephen Pope, loving husband, dad and papa, passed away at the age of 73. Steve was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 1, 1947, to Claude and Mary Belle Pope.
Steve loved learning how things worked, taking them apart and putting things together. This led to a career path in Amateur Radio (ham radio) and electronics. He first started work in Ft. Worth, TX at General Dynamics for 2 years and then returned to Des Moines where he worked for Dictaphone. He later worked on bio-medical equipment for UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center for 30+ years before retiring.
On August 5, 1979, he married Debra McClellan. They raised two children, Stephanie and James.
Steve had a passion for the F-111 military bomber, his 1969 Boss 302, and RC model boats and planes. He enjoyed his hobbies with many friends over the years. He was a proud Eagle Scout who shared his love for the outdoors with his children. Steve had a special place in his heart for his animals; dogs (Kaley, Shiloh), cat (Misty), and the squirrels, rabbits and birds. He was known for his commitment to family, humor, good conversation, and his kind and compassionate spirit.
Steve is survived by his wife, Deb; daughter, Stephanie Hoeppner (Silas); son, James Pope (Tatiana); four grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; and many family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Mary Belle and his sister, Janice Juhl.
A graveside service will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date.
