Donna Woody
December 31, 2020
Donna Maye Comegys Woody passed peacefully, with her boys by her side, on Thursday, December 31, 2020.
She was born to Ora and Laura Comegys on April 17, 1928. She graduated from East High School and in 1946 met the love of her life, Hugh Woody, a track star who had also graduated from East High. They married on August 20th, 1948. She worked as a waitress at Katz Drugstore, a clerk at Woolworth Dime Store and a claims adjuster at American Associated Insurance Company. She then worked alongside Hugh at Don Johnson Pharmacy and they welcomed two sons, Stephen and Matthew into their family. She later worked at Hiland Bakery for 20 years and retired in 2009.
Donna loved her family beyond words and she loved to serve the Lord. They were members of Highland Park Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church before joining Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. Donna and Hugh were both very active in Boy Scouts for 21 years and cherished many long lasting relationships with their scouts. She and Hugh loved to dance and spent hours at the Riviera and Val Air Ballrooms. She and Hugh had a passion for traveling and were able to have visited all 50 states except Delaware and Hawaii. They also drove to Alaska, Niagara Falls, Quebec and through most of Canada. They camped on most of their trips which was another joy they shared. She loved the outdoors and shared countless vacations with Hugh and the boys and their families camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing and just enjoying her time with everyone. She passed her love of the outdoors to every one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She valued her time with friends and family to no end and was always so selfless and giving to everyone.
Among many who will always cherish Donna are the surviving members of her family: Sons Steve (Karen) Woody and Matt (Lynn) Woody; grandchildren Jesse Woody, Erin Schirm, Elisabeth (Jason) Brunk, and Alexa (Paul) Lemon; great-grandchildren Lilah and Harlow Dempsey and Autumn and Joselyn Brunk, Arlie Schirm, and James Lemon; sister Jean Alderman; and a host of loving family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Woody; sister, Joann; brothers Charles, James and Richard.
Donna will be so greatly missed and her memories will always bring smiles to those that knew her. There is comfort in knowing she is with the Lord and reunited with the love of her life, Hugh and family members that she missed dearly. Her Light will always shine bright.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Shiloh Home of Hope, PO Box 748 615 Congress St, Emporia, KS 66801 in memory of Donna.
A private family service will be held at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, 511 Des Moines St, Des Moines. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, Des Moines.

I attended Zion Lutheran with Donna and Hugh. She was the first to notice that I was wearing a maturity dress to church when I was pregnant with our first daughter. I was feeling fat and unsure and she was so encouraging. She made me feel better. That was 37 years ago and it still makes me cry. She was a kind, good lady. God's Peace.

Matt, wow, I remember your mom at the pharmacy when I walked to Harding Junior High every day 'back in the day'. I'm 66 years old, so do the math. I'd go next door to the small grocery store to get a 'Texas donut' to eat on the way to school. Oh the memories. Teri and I, of course, remember you and Lynn AND Jesse. Hope you all have done ok with the 'virus world' the past months. Our family hasn't had any issues yet - we've done a good job 'keeping it away'. VERY sorry for your loss Matt, I lost my mom 12 years ago - miss her VERY much too. Please have a very blessed year ahead - we're hoping to be able to 'get out of town' sometime in the near future. Your mom was a gem!!! MANY elbows bumps to you and your family.

I feel so lucky to have known Donna my whole life. She was my brother's godmother and she and Hugh were always there for both of us. I have fond memories of camping together, overnights at their home, and of spending time with her at the pharmacy. She was always kind, loving, and generous. She will be deeply missed.

Donna's life was an inspiration to everyone of how we should live each day. I really missed when Donna retired because I didnt get to spend time with her. I know that Donna will be missed by her family here but I know she is happy to be with Hugh again. I'm thankful for the kindness Donna gave to me.

My dearest Aunt Donna,
words cant tell you how much I Love you. I'll always cherish our phone calls and letters.
I didn't get to tell you I LOVE YOU one last time, but I hope you know I do. I'll be lost going to the mail box and not receiving a letter from you just when I need to hear from you.
You are my rock(my go to person) after dad and mom passed, nothing happened in my life that you weren't the first to hear about it. Thank you for always making me feel special in your life.
I love you
Lea Anne
