December 28, 2020
George W. Robinson, 91, passed on December 28, 2020, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born at home in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 8, 1929, to Ralph Robinson and Rose McQuiston.
He attended Phillips Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High, and East High schools. In 1946 George joined the Navy. He spent 18 months on Guam in the occupational forces. He then served on the USS Henrico APA45 (amphibious personal assault) for 3 ½ years making invasions in Korea. George was honorably discharged in 1951 in San Diego. While in the service, he was united in marriage to Darlene Peterson on March 27, 1949, in Des Moines.
George worked for the Des Moines Public Schools for 30 years and the Saydel Community Schools for 17 years. He served on the Transportation Committee of the Polk County Board-Supervisors. George was proud of his nearly 59 years of service in the Masonic Lodge. Through the years, he served as a Masonic Instructor, District Lecturer, Lodge Worshipful Master (twice) and Grand Lodge Senior Grand Deacon and Senior Grand Warden. His hobbies included repairing lawn mowers and snow blowers, as well as playing cribbage tournaments, hunting and fishing. More than anything, he loved spending time with family.
George is survived by his sons, Jeffrey (Sandy) Robinson, Barry (Barb) Robinson, and David Robinson; granddaughters, Natalie (Ken) Ketelsen, Jaime (Mike) Leo, Holly Robinson (Chuck Stanley), Joy (James) Comerford, and Heather Robinson (Josh Johnson); great-grandchildren, Madelyn Leo, Mya Johnson, Samuel Leo, Charlotte, and Caroline Comerford; brother-in-law, James Peterson (Lola VanWyk); nephews, Randall Robinson, Joe Robinson, and Ted Bish; and nieces, Connie Love and Teresa Robinson.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Darlene; his parents; brother, Ralph Robinson; sister, Gayle Halterman; and nephew, Daniel Bish.
Private graveside services took place at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. When we can safely gather again, a Celebration of Life will be held to honor George.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or Scottish Rite Care, in loving memory of George.
