John Leopold

John “Pete” James Leopold, 86, passed away December 23, 2020.

John was born April 10, 1934 in Des Moines to Carl and Mary (Munzenmaier) Leopold. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. On March 6, 1959, he married Judy Shanahan. John was the very proud father of Kevin, born December 4, 1962 and Kyle, born January 3, 1969. He finally got the daughter he wanted when Kevin married Julie Roemmich in 1992. John retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber in January of 1995. He was a lifelong Cubs fan. John was very laid back and had a great sense of humor. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and Local Union #310.

John is survived by his loving wife, Judy; sons, Kevin (Julie) Leopold and Kyle Leopold; brother, Harry “Buck” Leopold; as well as a host of extended family and dear friends.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; father, Carl and his stepmother, Frances.

Services will take place on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at 2:00 pm, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. The family will greet friends from 12:00 -2:00 pm prior to services.
