Angelo John "Babe" Palmer, 86, of Des Moines passed away on August 31, 2009, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston surrounded by his loving family. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with burial following at St. Ambrose Cemetery in Des Moines. The family will greet friends from 4-9 PM Thursday evening at the Church where there will be a 5 PM Rosary service and a 7 PM scripture service.
Angelo was a Navy veteran of WW II and served as a pharmacist's mate. He was a store manager and chief pharmacist for Walgreen's for 43 years serving in various stores in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. He served 3 terms on the Iowa Board of Pharmacy and was the first retail practicing pharmacist in the state of Iowa to be appointed to the board. He was a Polk Co. Reserve Deputy Sheriff working with drug abuse. For 27 years he practiced drug abuse work for various companies, the latest being United Community Service Company. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Bellizzi MacRae American Legion Post #659, the Iowa Pharmacists Association and was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte Palmer of Des Moines, his sons Samuel (Barbara) Palmer of Lady Lake, Florida and Michael (Tomi Sue) Palmer of Norwalk, his daughters Charlotte Marie Palmer of Mountain View, California, Susan (Terry) Bohle of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Elizabeth Palmer of Des Moines and Carol Palmer (Dan Chase) of Des Moines, his brother Rev. Frank Palmer of Des Moines, sister Mary Grochala of Des Moines as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Mary Palmer, brothers Joseph, James, Anthony and Rev. Samuel Palmer and an infant son Timothy.
