Benita Valdez, age 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. She was born the daughter of Anthony and Jesse Cuevas on November 27, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa. Benita graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948.
Benita married the love of her life, Darrell Valdez, in 1952 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, while Darrell was serving in the Army. She began working fulltime at Northwestern Bell and retired after 50 years of service, and later worked part time at Sears.
Her family was her first priority and she took great pride in providing them a loving home. Cooking was one of her joys, and she loved hosting holidays and get-togethers with family. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, putting together puzzles, word puzzles, and going to casinos. She especially enjoyed travelling and making cherished memories, including trips to Colorado, Mexico, California, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington, D.C., where they visited Eucharistic Congress. Above all else, she treasured time spent with her family and her legacy will forever live on in the hearts of her beloved family.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Darrell Valdez; children, Mike (Ann) Valdez, Terry (Felipe) Lopez, and Jeff Valdez; grandchildren, Melissa (John) Schultz, Joshua (Andrea) Valdez, Angela (Dave) McGillvary, Donovan (Stacey) Van Gundy, Daniel Valdez, Julia Lopez, Austin (Jenny) Valdez, Brandon (Anna) Valdez, Nicholas Valdez, Benjamin Valdez, Marcus Valdez, Joseph Valdez, Lily Valdez, Cheyenne Van Gundy, Jesse Van Gundy, Jacob McGillvary, Kayla Arellano, Aubrey Valdez, Hayden Valdez, Collin Valdez, Colt Valdez on the way; great-grandchildren, Sophia Schultz, Elizabeth Schultz, Zachary Valdez, Evelyn Valdez, and Isabel Valdez; siblings, Ernestine Strutchen, Roberta Bejarno, and Lucy Carre; brother-in-law, Manuel Valdez; sister-in-law, Frances Gallardo; and many other loving family members and friends.
Benita was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Jesse Cuevas.
Prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m., with rosary to be recited after on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

Such fun memorires of Bonita and Darrel attending water exercise classes at Mercy Wellness Center. Bonita was such a soft spoken, kind hearted person who was a friend to many other class members. Thouhts and prayers to Darrel and all the family members!

My sincerest condolences to Benita's loving family. She gave wonderful, kind and loving values for all to live by. We didn't see each other often but when we did, I always felt her warmth and caring spirit. And, she had a great sense of humor. Prayers be with you all.
