Esther Louise Morris
December 16, 2020
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Esther Louise Morris, our loving and devoted mother on December 16, 2020.
Our mother was born January 12th, 1952 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born to two of the most amazing people, Wenceslaus and Rosemary Gomez. It is to no surprise that she too would become an amazing woman.
At the age of 34 years young, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Our mom would not accept leaving her three small children behind. She was determined to fight; her weapons of choice were her will to live and her faith in God. With the help of the Lord she was able to claim victory over Cancer and not only watch her children grow up to adulthood, but also see and spend time with her grandchildren, who affectionately called her Geeya.
Our mother Esther loved her faith. It was the center of her world. She had many rough patches in her life, but she would never let that shake her faith. She never blamed the Lord when life knocked her down, she trusted him. Even in her final bout, with God by her side she fought till the very end.
The thing our mother loved most on this earth was her family. She didn’t need fancy possessions, she only wanted to be around her family. She enjoyed Sunday family dinners, camping with her siblings, playing card games, outdoor movies with the grandkids, and watching reality TV. She loved supporting her grandkids in their passions whether it be school, dance, or sports.
Our mother is best known for her kind heart, her beautiful smile, her infectious laugh, her strong faith, and her love of family.
She is preceded in death by her grandmother Abundia Lopez and her father Wenceslaus Gomez.
She leaves behind her mother Rosemary Gomez; her five brothers John Gomez (Kim), Jess Gomez, Tom Gomez, Mike Gomez (Gina), and Ben Gomez; her four sisters Vicki Griffin (Ray), Maggie Gomez, Ro Cardenas (Tony), and Inez Cleary (Richard); her three children David Gomez (Becky), Bethany Davis, and Billy Morris (Jana); and her nine grandkids Dakota, Krystina, Connor, Camryn, Bella, Erin, Ryan, Zoey, and Carson.
Our mother will be greatly missed. She has left an imprint on the hearts of many and will not be forgotten.
Family is practicing social distancing and masks are required. Family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 28, 2020 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Rd., Des Moines. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Catholic Diocese of Des Moines in loving memory of Esther.
Due to Covid, there will be a Celebration of Life and reception gathering at a later date.

Dear Friends, Our hearts grieve for you today while we give thanks for Esther! She touched so many lives with her loving spirit, generous self-giving and ability to deal with life's difficulties with her deep faith and contagious joy. For many years Esther shared her love of God with our students in the Religious Education program at Visitation. It was truly a family commitment along with her children and sisters. You were all so faithful and generous with your time and talent! Please accept our deepest sympathy, and be assured of our prayers for all your beautiful family. Dear Rosemary, your beloved daughter is at peace now with her God and her dear dad! Dear Bethany, Bill and David, your mother's love will always be with you as she watches over you from heaven. Dear sisters, brothers and grandchildren, what a saint you have in heaven today, a model for all of us to follow. We love all of you and give thanks for our dear friend Esther. May she rest in God's peace!

My most heartfelt condolences to Esther's family. She was a very special person and I'll miss her when our group is able to go back to Oakridge for bingo. I worked with her through that and through Adopt-A-Family for many, many years!! May the memories you've shared be of comfort to you in the days ahead. God bless you all!
