Thomas E. Simet
November 27, 2020
Thomas E. Simet, 88, passed away on November 27, 2020 in Des Moines. He was born on February 4, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska to John and Marie Clair (Riss) Simet. Tom lived in Spencer, Iowa for many years. He was an automobile mechanic by trade and enjoyed serving in the Spencer Volunteer Fire Department, the Lions Club, and attending high school sports. He was a loving father to his son and to all his son’s friends as well. One friend said of Tom, “He put his son and his son’s buddy’s interests ahead of his own.” In 1985, he and his wife Virginia moved to Des Moines, Iowa where he helped her set up an in-home daycare center while he continued with his own automotive repair career. By 2002 he had retired, although his workbench at his former job was left “open” and he frequently returned from time to time to rebuild a few alternators! He enjoyed attending the daycare “kids” events as they grew up, the Lions Club, and the American Legion where he made change at the weekly Bingo night. He enjoyed country music, going to flea markets and auctions as well.
He is survived by his son Jeffrey (Julia) Simet and a host of nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, E. Virginia, “Ginner”.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with a presentation by Bellizzi MacRae American Legion Post #659 at 11:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 pm at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr. in Adel. Genesis 1.26 tells us that we are created in Gods image. This is the only way I could ever remember Tom. I was blessed to have known him.
