Ethel Burks
November 25, 2020
Ethel Ollie Burks entered into eternal life on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. She was born to Martha and John Burks on December 1, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ethel was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose happiest times were spent with the ones she loved. She had an ornery spirit and infectious laugh that came out whenever she wanted to help her grandkids sneak extra desserts or cheat while playing games in order to win. She was very generous and always giving of everything she had. She enjoyed having children around and poured out an abundance of love onto the foster children and many daycare kids she had in her home throughout her lifetime. She was hard working and faithfully worked alongside her husband to provide for their family.
Ethel loved the Lord and was filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. She could always be found praying and singing His praises. Her strength was found in the Word of God and she was bold in sharing the gospel. She faithfully attended services at Temple of Rest Assembly.
Her legacy of faith, family and fun will live on through her surviving children, Martha Mutchler, Mark (Karen) Crook and Donna (Aaron) Edwards; daughter-in-law, Lois Lingle; grandchildren, Rebecca, John, Kelly, Bryan, Joshua, Michelle, Sarah, Ashley and Christy; 20 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and siblings, John (Doloris) Burks, Margaret (Duane) Gilbert and Tillie (Kenneth) Derrey; and many other beloved family and friends who were so dear to her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Martha and John Burks; the love of her life, Gaylord Crook; her son, William Lingle; son-in-law, Richard Mutchler; grandson, Aaron Jacob Edwards; and brothers, Clyde Burks, Virgil Burks and David Burks.
Funeral services will be held on what would have been her 86th birthday, Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at 2:00pm at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Des Moines, IA. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00pm.

What can i say that hasnt already been said? Honestly nothing. There is no way to sum up a lifetime of love, laughter, loyalty and genorosity. Grandma, you taught me to love my family with everything in me, you taught me to laugh as loud and often as I could, from you I learned to be fiercly loyal to the people I care for and to be genorus to a fault wirh everyone I meet. Grandma you did so much for my family for so long. I love you Grandma Ethel.

Oh Ethel..where to begin 😉..she was an amazing woman who was very affectionate with a twist of orneriness that would catch you off guard. She loved her sweets and Diet Coke would win her over everytime. You never caught her w/o her homemade handkerchief . She always was heard humming a gospel song in the hall. She was so proud of her family and would constantly share her photos and tell her story over and over again and laugh the loudest at her funnies. She called all of us baby or honey and wanted to
kiss your face followed with the biggest grandma hug ever! She will be very much missed but Im
sure your passing out all those hugs and kisses where ever you are.❤❤

My heart is very sad and heavy. Aunt Ethel was very special to me. I have many fond memories of her, going back to when I was a child and she would come to the house to see mom and dad but she always made sure to come see how I was doing and pat me on the head letting me know she loved me.
I truly felt loved by Aunt Ethel, through her smile, her hugs, her voice.
My fondest memory of Aunt Ethel was seeing her rejoice and worship God. i always wanted to yeild to the spirit of God the way she did. once while she was praising God with her arms raised high, I thought, if I go stand under her arms the spirit will roll over onto me like that.
I remember one time i was sitting in front of Aunt Ethel in church and she handed me a mint. She always had mints and she always shared with those around her. I was looking at the mint and thinking this is weird, the green stripes are missing. I started to unwrap it when all of a sudden Aunt Ethel's hand came flying up over the seat snatching the candy and she said, "Oh kid not THAT one, I already sucked on that one" she handed me another one, it had the stripes still on it and I was SO glad she kept me from eating the first one. I've had many laughs over that one over the years.
I'll never forget the time Aunt Ethel was going on vacation with us in the bus. Dad was driving and Aunt Ethel was sitting at the table when dad hit a bump and the refrigerator door came open, the bowl of baked beans flew out spilling all over Aunt Ethel. She laughed, went into the bathroom changed her clothes and hung her pants flapping out the window to dry as we drove down the highway.
What I loved most about Aunt Ethel is, that she was just who she was.
I love you Aunt Ethel. I hope to one day see you again and together we will sing praises to God.
Rest in peace my dear friend.
