Mary Joan "Jo" Reid
November 20, 2020
Mary Joan “Jo” Reid, 81, died on Friday, November 20, 2020. She had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, but thankfully was able to spend the last few months living with her daughter, receiving hospice care at home. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Jo is survived by her dear sister, Jeanie Marley of Overland Park, KS, her children Kelly Casel (husband Mike), of Ankeny, IA, Randy Reid (wife Sarah) of Des Moines, IA, Kristen Harrigan (husband Ron Logan) of Mesa, AZ, and 8 grandchildren.
Jo grew up in Kansas City, MO, attending Southeast High School and Pershing grade school. She met the love of her life, Jerry, at the University of Missouri and they married in 1961. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before Jerry passed away in 2018. Jo and Jerry lived in many places over the course of their lives. Jo had a dance studio in Kosciusko, MS, for many years and she continued to teach dancing as they moved to other cities. They landed in Ankeny, IA, in 1984 and never left! Jo was an active member of Ankeny Community Theatre for over 30 years. She attended Ankeny First United Methodist Church where she and Jerry were both in the choir.
After Jerry retired, they became world travelers, enjoying many cruises and tropical trips each year. Jo and Jerry loved to visit Branson, MO, making several trips annually. George Dyer was a favorite, and almost all Christmas presents were purchased in Branson! They never missed an opportunity to see Neil Diamond and Il Divo in concert, sometimes seeing them in multiple cities during a concert tour.
Please feel free to share your memories and condolences with Jo’s family personally, through email or social media. We want everyone to remain safe and healthy and for those reasons we will not be holding a visitation.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 30, 2020 at 1:00 pm. It will be held graveside at Ankeny Memorial Gardens, 4208 N. Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA, 50023. All are welcome, but those wishing to attend will be asked to wear a mask and remain physically distanced.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to WesleyLife Hospice or to the Chancel Choir at Ankeny First United Methodist Church in Jo’s honor.
Arrangements are being handled through Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Dear Kristen, Randy, and Kelly. I just now heard of your mom's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. Jo was such a beautiful person inside and out and I have so many good memories of her and your dad from ACT plays and ACT II. Praying now for God's comfort to you and your families.

Dear Kelly, Randy, Kristen and families; Joyce and I were very surprised and saddened to learn of Jo's passing. We have many fond memories of doing things with Jo & Jerry. Including several plays that Jo directed, many practices and performances of ACT II, and church choir. We especially enjoyed participating in 2 RAGBRAI's with them where one couple would ride their tandem bike for 1/2 day, the other couple would drive a vehicle, meet them for lunch and then switch for the 2nd 1/2 of the day. Jo made a very nice diary of the weeks events, including pictures and humourous happenings along the way. This is very precious to us. We enjoyed them visiting us in Naples while on their way to a cruise. Their contribution to theatre arts in Ankeny is outstanding and Ankeny is a better place due to their time, talents, and many contributions. We are presently in Naples, Florida and due to the pandemic will not be back in Iowa until May. Sincerely, Duane & Joyce Spicer

Jo was such a terrific person. She cast me in my first theatre show at ACT and we shared many wonderful times together at the theatre, working out at Curves, and coffee at her house. I always looked forward to her photo albums of she and Jerry's yearly trips to the Carribean and her showcase of tropical swimsuits. She was a mentor, friend, and an inspiration. Her smile and laughter will remain forever in my heart.

I am so sorry to hear about Jo. she was such a driving force of ACT. if it weren't for Joe casting me in The wizard of Oz I wouldn't have the chance to meet such wonderful friends and have such wonderful opportunities. I will cherish all my memories I have of ACT with her in shows and ACT 2 because of her. she was a visionary.
I wish we weren't in the times we are so that we could gather to celebrate this wonderful lady who was so giving of her time and talents.
Payers to the family.
