Hollis was born on December 17, 1922 to Guy and Clara Hoard in Grand Marsh, WI. On Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at the age of 86, Hollis died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Per his wishes, his body has been donated to Des Moines University and no services are scheduled at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Hollis graduated from Hancock, WI high school in 1940 as class valedictorian. He enlisted in the US Navy on December 4, 1940 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 1940 to 1942. As a Photographer's Mate, on December 7, 1941, he photographed the attack on Pearl Harbor. Later, Hollis served in the South Pacific before ending his military career in 1945 while stationed in Pensacola, FL as an aerial photography instructor.
In 1944 Hollis married Nona Morey and they lived in Davenport until 1988. He worked as a salesman, primarily for Moore Business Forms before retiring and moving to Boone. Hollis married Wilma Carter November 19, 1993.
Hollis was very active in the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge in Boone, where he was Past Master of Lodge and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association, American Legion, VFW and Eastern Star.
Hollis is survived by his loving wife, Wilma; two sons, Guy (Daria) Harold Hoard of Davenport; and Gary (Kathleen) Edward Hoard of Madrid; daughter, Nancy (Robert) Sue Briggs of Boone; and his grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah and Melissa Briggs and Gerald Hoard. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nona Ruth Morey on April 24, 1992.
