Roger Martin Maurer
July 30, 2009
Roger Martin Maurer, May 1, 1940 to July 30, 2009. Roger, 69, was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Lyon County in northwest Iowa to Herman & Eleanor Maurer. He graduated from Alvord High School and later took classes at Des Moines Area Community College and Faith Baptist Bible College. In May 2000, Roger retired from John Deere, Des Moines, after nearly 30 yrs. as a machinist.
Roger is proceeded in death by his father, and by granddaughter Katriese Maurer. Surviving is Roger's wife, Donna; his 96-year-old mother of Alvord, Iowa; three children: Gregory of St. Paul, Minnesota; Jeannine Maurer of Des Moines, Julie Carrington (Wes) of Pahump, Nevada, and Janelle Cooper (Tony) of Marion, Iowa; five grand-children: Matthew Roger and Kaitlyn of Nevada, Jessica of Minnesota, Ashley (Ben) of Iowa, and Amanda of Minnesota.; three great-grandsons: Mason, Jory and Talant; and six brothers and two sisters: Harlan (Donna), Gene, Robert (Jan), Marilyn Ripperda, Karon (Denny) Kramer, Paul (Mavis), Alan (Norma), and Jerry (Barbara).
Roger has attended First Federated Church since 1984 and was active in different ministries, beginning with Circles of Concern in 1985 and ending with Greeting. His love of missions has taken him on twenty-plus trips all over the world. Roger and Donna have also been involved with Drake University International students since 1986. Roger loved building and flying his two experimental aircraft.
Roger became involved with Camp Appanoose, a Christian Camp near Lake Rathbun in southern Iowa, in 1997 when he and Donna conducted an aviation camp, and then they "graduated" into cooking. As a result, Roger requested Camp Appanoose for his memorial.
We celebrate with Roger as he is now cancer free and is in the presence of his Lord and Savior. The family would like to say thank you for all the prayers, Scriptures shared, cards, calls, e-mails, visits, food, and words of encouragement. A special thank you to Dave Long, Roger's best friend, for all the time Dave has spent collecting & printing pictures and running errands for the family.

Donna and family,
I just want to express my feelings about the Funeral service for Roger today. What a testimony to Roger's life and how he came to put his faith in Jesus. I so enjoyed seeing Gilbert and Pam Braithwaite again. Also Mike and Bonnie O'Doonan, I thought the whole service from start to finish was the best funeral service I have ever attended for presenting the way of salvation. I'm sure Roger was overjoyed as he watched from Heaven...cheering anyone in attendance who does not know Jesus in a personal way to accept Him now!

Dear Donna and family,
I wanted to send you our deepest sympathy. I will be praying for you during your time of grieving, as the Lord brings you to mind. My mom shared with me what an amazing service that was given for Roger and all the people there to hear the message. My heart goes out to you during this time. Love Bert and girls

Jeannine & family, I know you have gone through the last few weeks with a heavy heart and my prayers were with you. Those will continue as you face the next few days of saying good bye. Your love and kindness will come back to you in many ways - most precious of those will be the good memories. You are blessed. Mona

Dear Donna and family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you. My favorite memories of Uncle Roger are the times we spent together at our family reunions at Lake Pahoya, especially the "snipe hunts." Amber wanted me to share her favorite memory of her Great-Uncle Roger -- when he was teaching her how to cast for the fishing tournament and he told her to "throw it out there" and she did -- pole and all. We never did find the fishing pole, but had a great time that weekend. We will miss Uncle Roger. Love, JoAnn Maurer

Donna and family:
We shall always remember the last time we visited with you both. It was the day that Roger earlier in the day had renewed his license. He laughed as he said, "Now that is having faith, don't you think?" Yes, it was and especially said much about Roger's faith in the Lord! I think it was a four year or six year license and he had previously been diagnosed with cancer. Never did I see Roger at Goodwill that he did not exhibit the "faith of a true believer." He always liked to tell about the many trips that you took and also the trips to the Iowa State Fair with the Goodwill folks.
One thing we know...the Lord that welcomed Roger into Heaven will also see you, Donna, and your family through until we all go to join him in Heaven where there is absolutely no pain or hurt. May God richly bless your heart and comfort you in the way that only He can comfort. Please do not hesitate to call if you want to talk...we will have willing and listening ears for you!

My heart is feeling your pain, My eyes are seeing your pain
and my ears are hearing your pain, for a loss as this I do
not know, we expect our Grandparents to go, but not our parents
at this age that we are. So all I can give is my sincere and
deepest condulances and I hope you know that I am here for you!
Love you much,
Julie Ann Carrington (Maurer)
