Roger Martin Maurer, May 1, 1940 to July 30, 2009. Roger, 69, was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Lyon County in northwest Iowa to Herman & Eleanor Maurer. He graduated from Alvord High School and later took classes at Des Moines Area Community College and Faith Baptist Bible College. In May 2000, Roger retired from John Deere, Des Moines, after nearly 30 yrs. as a machinist.
Roger is proceeded in death by his father, and by granddaughter Katriese Maurer. Surviving is Roger's wife, Donna; his 96-year-old mother of Alvord, Iowa; three children: Gregory of St. Paul, Minnesota; Jeannine Maurer of Des Moines, Julie Carrington (Wes) of Pahump, Nevada, and Janelle Cooper (Tony) of Marion, Iowa; five grand-children: Matthew Roger and Kaitlyn of Nevada, Jessica of Minnesota, Ashley (Ben) of Iowa, and Amanda of Minnesota.; three great-grandsons: Mason, Jory and Talant; and six brothers and two sisters: Harlan (Donna), Gene, Robert (Jan), Marilyn Ripperda, Karon (Denny) Kramer, Paul (Mavis), Alan (Norma), and Jerry (Barbara).
Roger has attended First Federated Church since 1984 and was active in different ministries, beginning with Circles of Concern in 1985 and ending with Greeting. His love of missions has taken him on twenty-plus trips all over the world. Roger and Donna have also been involved with Drake University International students since 1986. Roger loved building and flying his two experimental aircraft.
Roger became involved with Camp Appanoose, a Christian Camp near Lake Rathbun in southern Iowa, in 1997 when he and Donna conducted an aviation camp, and then they "graduated" into cooking. As a result, Roger requested Camp Appanoose for his memorial.
We celebrate with Roger as he is now cancer free and is in the presence of his Lord and Savior. The family would like to say thank you for all the prayers, Scriptures shared, cards, calls, e-mails, visits, food, and words of encouragement. A special thank you to Dave Long, Roger's best friend, for all the time Dave has spent collecting & printing pictures and running errands for the family.
