Thomas James Fredrick Smith "T.J."
November 11, 2020
Thomas James Fredrick Smith “T.J.”, 41, passed away November 11, 2020 at his home in Des Moines. He was born in Des Moines, IA, on February 6, 1979 to Thomas and Linda Smith.
T.J. was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in February 2007. With the help of doctors he fought a long and hard battle, for almost 14 years. He did multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation (including cyberknife), and clinical trials. He just wanted to watch his girls grow up and graduate high school, and through his strong will and stubbornness he did that and more.
T.J. attended Oak Park Elementary, Harding Middle School, and North High School. T.J. was a hard worker from a young age. He had a passion for working in the lawn care industry. He worked for Perfi-cut, The Cutting Edge, Capital Sitework and Design, and A-1 Sod Lawn and Hardscape. He also worked for Alco-test.
T.J. deeply loved his daughters; he would have Marvel nights with Ani, and loved to cook with Lexi. He loved spending time with his grandbabies, and always had a huge smile when they were around. T.J. took his beloved companion dog Duke with him everywhere he went. He enjoyed traveling and having date nights with his girlfriend Amanda.
T.J. took joy in riding his motorcycle around town, visiting with people, and having UFC fight nights with his friends Brett and Kenny. He loved to talk to people about his girls and his grandkids. He was selfless, strong willed, determined, stubborn, and a true fighter until the very end.
T.J. is survived by his daughters Lexis (Joshue) Ruiz, and Ani Smith; sisters Catherine Smith, and Christine (Zack Barrentine) Smith; girlfriend Amanda Prescott; ex-wife Sabrina Smith; grandchildren Marcelino, Castiel, and Nala Ruiz; in-laws Allen and Cathy Porter; and multitude of close family and friends.
T.J. was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Claude Smith and Linda Kaye (Boyd) Smith; friends Nathan Pendleton and Andrew Hurley-Boyd.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in memory of T.J.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines.

My whole heart breaks for Lexi, Ani, and Amanda, along with the rest of Tj's loved ones. anyone who got the privilege of knowing him was blessed. He was one of the strongest, most inspiring men I know. He played a huge role in my late boyfriend, Aj's life. They werent just friends, they were brothers. Tj was such a selfless, caring man. He was such a huge support system for Aj. Just 8 days before Aj passed, Tj had made him his amazing potato soup. Tj made it just because he asked. He brought him like 4 huge tupperwares full of it. He always made life a little bit easier for Aj, just being there supporting and helping him. He always offered to help with the dogs while Aj was sick. He took our puppy for the day when we had to go out to Iowa City. Always made sure to visit him at the hospital when he could. One time when we had car troubles, Tj brought Aj some fresh clothes to wear at the hospital when I couldnt get home to get some.He would always joke about Aj having the worst car luck. Even though he had his own struggles, he made sure he was always there for anyone who needed him. After Aj's passing I periodically talked to Tj. He was one of the few people in Aj's life who did. It ment so much to me, and shows how much he cared for people. He had a heart of gold. I can't say enough good things about him. I take comfort in knowing that for the first time in a long time, Tj is no longer suffering and is reunited with Aj & that puts a little happiness back into my heart. I continue to pray for everyone of Tj's loved ones. He really did make the world a better place.

So glad that Big Tom and TJ had families to love them. As Lillian's sister I met Big Tom and remember his smile and laugh.

TJ was a student of mine at Harding in the 90's. I remember him as a good person, smart, funny, with a strong will and a knack for fixing things. I am saddened by his passing but glad to hear he got to enjoy time with his kids and grandkids. Peace to all of TJ's loved ones.

So sorry for your loss. Although I never met TJ I feel like I knew him through Brett. Lexi and Ani thank you for sharing your dad with Brett. Amanda thanks for opening your home to Brett and Lux. Thanks to all of you and Cathy for including Brett in T J's final days. I know it meant the world to Brett to be there for TJ like TJ has been there for him through the years You're in my thoughts and prayers. Bretts mom.
