Wilma Waldorf
November 09, 2020
Wilma Lee (Van Dike) Waldorf entered heaven on November 9, 2020, joining her late husband Lee and newborn son Rodger. Wilma was born August 23, 1929, to Forrest and Edna Van Dike in Cambridge, Iowa. She was raised in Altoona alongside her brother Robert. In high school, she was named all-conference in basketball. After high school, she met Lee Waldorf in 1947 and then married December 31, 1948, and moved to Mitchellville where they spent most of their lives. Following the loss of their first child, Rodger, they raised three sons.
Wilma had worked at the Polk County Courthouse. She then became a school cook at Mitchellville Elementary School for the Southeast Polk School District up until retirement. She truly enjoyed her fellow co-workers, but most of all, she enjoyed being around the children. Wilma was active with the American Legion Post 155 Auxiliary and the Mitchellville Fire Department Auxiliary. Following Lee’s death, she moved to Grimes and met new friends and then one final move to Edencrest at Siena Hills in Ankeny in 2020.
Wilma was preceded in death by her Parents, Brothers Doyle and Robert, Husband Lee, and son Rodger. She is survived by Sons Phil (Dana) of Omaha, Paul (Cheryl) of Longview, WA, Patrick (Karen) of Ankeny, and daughter-in-law Paula of Loveland, CO. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Due to COVID-19, a graveside service will take place at Mitchellville Cemetery on Friday, November 13, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.
Her family would like to recognize the outstanding care provided by the Ramsey Village, Edencrest at Siena Hills, and Suncrest Hospice staff during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, family asks donations made to the Mitchellville Fire Department, American Legion Post 155, or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
