October 29, 2020
January 31st, 1936 – October 29th, 2020
Hank was born on the South Side of Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School and Drake University. He worked at Bankers Life in the 1950’s where he met his wife, Beryl. After they were married, he served his country in the United States Army. Following his service, he was a CPA with Peat Marwick and then Meredith Corporation.
They lived in Urbandale, where they raised two children and were members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Hank was a member of the Izaak Walton League and enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as collecting stamps and coins. They also spent many years enjoying their cabin in the Lake of the Ozarks and traveling around the US, Caribbean and Europe,
When he retired from Meredith, he and Beryl moved to Sun City West, Arizona. They spent many years golfing, buying and selling antiques, and socializing with other snow birds. They were members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, enjoyed their Sunday brunches at the “Hole in One”, and loved the warm, sunny weather. They spent their summers back in Iowa in Glenstone Village.
Hank passed away from complications that arose due to esophageal cancer and heart failure. Hank is survived by his wife, Beryl Wittkowski; his son, Mark Wittkowski, of Bismarck, North Dakota; and his daughter, Jean Erwin (Michael), of Crystal Lake, Illinois. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Quinn, Andrew, Gabriel and Samantha. Hank was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mildred Wittkowski.
Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.
