Robert “Bob” Summy, son of Albert Jennings Summy and Minnie Mae Wilson, was born October 28, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa, and died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. He was 83 years old.
Bob spent his entire life in Des Moines. He got his education from East High. He was drafted in the Army in 1943, serving his country honorably in WWII. He was injured while in the military, which ended his military commitment in 1944. He married Nadine Woods in 1944; to that marriage four children were born: Dennis, Steve, Mike and Tammy. Bob worked for Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company as a tire inspector, and retired from that after 35 years of service.
Bob was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Highland Park Auburn Lodge. He was a member of the Saylor Township Fire Department for 15 years, participated in organizing the Saydel Little League, was a former Saydel Township Constable, and was a Special Deputy under former Polk County Sheriff Hildreth. Bob enjoyed being a member of AMVETS Post #2 and a member of the East Euclid Hy-Vee Coffee Club.
Robert is survived by his wife Nadine of 62 years; his children, Dennis (Ruth) Summy of Osceola, Iowa, Steve (Jane) Summy of Durango, Colorado, Mike (Robin) Summy of Ingleside, Illinois, and Tammy Summy of Des Moines; his sister, Helen Tamasi of Des Moines; his brother, Earl (Wilma) Summy of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Tracy Bemis, Sherri Thelen, Mike Summy, Jr., Kyle Summy, Madison Burnsworth, Stephanie Del Gado, and Travis McKay; his great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Libby Bemis, Jeremy Thelen, Stefan and Ariana Del Gado. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Minnie; his sisters, Cleva and Colleen; his brothers, Kenneth, William, Carl, Don, Dale, and Jim.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 27, 2007 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue; visitation will be 5-8 P.M., Friday at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7:00 P.M. Burial will take place in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
